If you share a computer and don’t want other users accessing certain applications, there is a new feature in Windows 7 that allows you to block them. Today we take a quick look at restricting what programs other users can access using AppLocker.
Note: AppLocker is only available in Ultimate and Enterprise versions of Windows 7.
Using AppLocker
AppLocker alternative that works on Windows 7 Pro? I'm helping a small company with some IT work and was thinking AppLocker would solve a lot of their issues. To access Group Policy Editor and create rules in AppLocker you’ll need to be logged in as Administrator. Click on Start and type gpedit.msc into the search box and hit Enter.
Under Local Computer Policy go to Computer Configuration Windows Settings Security Settings Application Control Policies AppLocker.
Now you will see the overall controls for the applications.
Under Configure Rule Enforcement click on the Configure rule enforcement link.
Now under AppLocker Properties check the boxes next to Configured under Executable rules then click Ok.
Blocking Apps from Running
In this scenario, Jack wastes time playing games like Minesweeper and Solitaire when he should be doing his homework, so we are going to block all of the games. After completing the steps above, under the Overview section click on Executable Rules.

Here you can add a description to the rule so you can keep track of them is there are several rules configured. When everything looks right click on Create.
A message pops up saying default rules haven’t been created yet. It is important to make sure they are created so click Yes to this message.
Now you will see the default rules and the new one you created showing Jack is denied access to the Microsoft Games directory.
After creating the rule make sure and go into services and make Application Identification is started and that it’s set to automatically start as well otherwise the rules won’t work. By default this service is not started so you will need to enable it.
Now, when Jack logs into his user account and tries to access the games he will only see the following message. Only an Administrator can go in and change the rule.

I tried to configure Applocker to block a particular executable or allow only a certain group to access it, but as far as I can tell it is not supported in Windows 7 Professional even though policy terms exists for it.
I see the error message: appidsvc.dll: AppLocker component not available on this SKU.

I appreciate that third party products may exist but would rather use a built in feature. I have looked into software restriction policies but that feature seems to have been deprecated by Microsoft.

This is an alternate solution.
You can encrypt executable files using Windows EFS (Encrypting File System) feature so that others cannot use your file.
The EFS feature of Windows encrypts the file with your password. You don't need to remember any separate passwords to access your files. Also, if you want to give access to another user, you can install your certificate on their user and so, even they can start using it. Os x software.
Note : You can't use this feature on Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, and Windows 7 Home Premium.
You can encrypt a file using by going to Properties --> General --> Advanced --> Encrypt.
To create a backup of the certificate :

If there is more than one EFS certificate, you should back up all of them.
Click the Action menu, point to All Tasks, and then click Export.
In the Certificate Export wizard, click Next, click Yes, export the private key, and then click Next.
Click Personal Information Exchange, and then click Next.
Type the password you want to use, confirm it, and then click Next. The export process will create a file to store the certificate.
Type a name for the file and the location (include the whole path) or click Browse, navigate to a location, type a file name, and then click Save.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
To install the certificate :
Double-Click the certificate you want to install
Click Next, and then enter the password you used to protect the certificate and then click Next.
Click Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate and then click Next
Click Finish and the import of the certificate will be successful.
Restart your computer for the changes come in effect. (optional)
